Recruiting for security
The Centre for Cyber Security is encouraging businesses to think about who is able to access confidential information when applying security safeguards. At NetBenefit we take this issue very seriously and believe that the industry in general needs to be far more thorough in its recruitment processes. Recruiting an IT technician is not remotely the same as adding to the sales or accounts teams.
The Centre’s spokesperson reports “Many critical losses and breaches occur through staff choosing to manipulate the system, either for personal gain or to cause trouble during or post-employment”. At NetBenefit we host solutions for various government organisations including the police, not to mention all kinds of corporate clients who need to be sure of complete security for their data and sites. Because of this we go far further than most IT suppliers and so we have developed a thorough vetting process for all of our technical people. If you are going to give your employees access to not only your own IP and business data, but also that of your customers, you should be certain that you have the right people. Compromising that data could be a breach from which a business could struggle to recover.
This is why we place great importance on our recruitment process. We not only take up very thorough immediate references, but we also check for unspent criminal records, identity, nationality and immigration status, three years employment history including periods abroad or not working. We pride ourselves, therefore, not just on the exceptional talent and quality of our IT people but also that they are totally trustworthy. Those with rare technology skills are in high demand, but that doesn’t mean that companies can afford to be inattentive when it comes to recruitment. Knowing who has access to your data is one aspect of security, but how much do you know about that person?
